The truth about water

You might already know that your body is 60 per cent water. But do you know what water really does for your body, and the difference between safe water and healthy water? Do you know what makes water taste either amazing or...not? Are you drinking what’s right for you and the environment? Read on to find out more about nature’s most important resource.

The magic of water

There’s about 1.4 million cubic kilometres of water on the earth. The amount has stayed the same for two billion years. There’s water on the earth’s surface, but also in the ground and in the air.

Water moves around in a continuous cycle. Over a 100-year period, a water molecule spends 98 years in the ocean, 20 months as ice, about two weeks in lakes and rivers and less than a week in the atmosphere.

Even things that look solid contain water. A chicken is 75 per cent water, a pineapple 85 per cent, a tomato 95 per cent and an elephant 70 per cent.

With water everywhere, why are we always worried about having enough drinking water? People can only drink fresh water and some of it is trapped in ice caps, oceans and glaciers, leaving just 1% of the world’s water available for us to use.
