Theres about 1.4 million cubic kilometres of water on the earth. The amount has stayed the same for two billion years. Theres water on the earths surface, but also in the ground and in the air.

Water moves around in a continuous cycle. Over a 100-year period, a water molecule spends 98 years in the ocean, 20 months as ice, about two weeks in lakes and rivers and less than a week in the atmosphere. Even things that look solid contain water. A chicken is 75 per cent water, a pineapple 85 per cent, a tomato 95 per cent and an elephant 70 per cent. |
With water everywhere, why are we always worried about having enough drinking water? People can only drink fresh water and some of it is trapped in ice caps, oceans and glaciers, leaving just 1% of the worlds water available for us to use.
